Edamana Palli
The Edaman Cross, believed to have been brought by the Katamattam family from A.D. 700, was initially placed on the shores of the Thodupuzha River near Vazhithala. Before the construction of Arakuzha Church, believers used to come here, turn towards the cross, kneel down, and pray. Both Christians and non-Christians maintained the tradition of offering direct visual prayers at the Edaman Cross. Today, this cross is enshrined at St. Antony’s Chapel in Melukavu, near the hill of Malakkurisu. The present Edaman Cross was reconstructed in 1973, inaugurated on September 21, the feast day of St. Matthew the Apostle, and continues to host celebrations.

Edamana Palli
Building bridges of faith, one soul at a time
Two hundred years before the construction of Aarakuzha Marthamariam Church, there was a place called Edamanakurisupalli, which had Edamanakurusu and a cemetery attached to it in Aarakuzha. This indicates that Syrian Christians in Arakuzha have a recorded history of over 1200 years. Members of the Aarakuzha Edamana Illam were from a Brahmin family branch that had migrated from North Paravur to Perumballur and later converted to Christianity. They built Edamanakurisu, where Christians would light lamps, pray, and bury their dead. Documents related to Edamanakurisu have been found in Aarakuzha Church, which was established around 600 A.D by Brahmin converts from the Aarakuzha Edamana Illam. It was rebuilt as a small chapel and consecrated in 1812 by Edathattel Valiachan. However, due to religious offerings conducted by both Christians and Hindus, it was destroyed in 1859. The cross was then placed in a cupola beside Aarakuzha-Thottakkara Road. A church was built there and consecrated on December 23, 1973. A palm leaf inscription dated 1812 mentions the construction of the church. Francisca Souriar, a Namboothiri youth from Kidangur, was converted by Arnose Pathiri (1701–1732) and later became a renowned priest. He was buried north of the church and his tomb is still present in the cemetery chapel.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
