Malekurish Palli

Connecting hearts, transforming lives, and embracing grace in the journey of faith

“Hebrews 13:8”

Malekurish Palli

The Malekurish Church, also known as St. Sebastian’s Church, was built between 1800 and 1810 as a chapel on the south side of the church. It sits beside the Malayar River. Dedicated to V. Sebastianose, this church is believed to be blessed with divine presence and grace. The believers express their faith through processions, rituals along the path of the cross, kneeling, and touching the crucifix. The area from V. Antony’s Chapel to V. Sebastianose’s Chapel features 14 stations of the cross. These stations are beautifully organized from the Edaman Cross to V. Sebastianose’s Cross. During Advent, daily processions and prayers, especially on Fridays, enliven the spiritual journey. Mr. George Edathottiyodi’s relentless efforts and his father’s dedication led to the church’s establishment. Today, this tradition continues with fervor, particularly during Holy Mass and November. Believers consider the path to the cross a sacred pilgrimage.

Experience The Past

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Building bridges of faith, one soul at a time

There is a chapel named Malekurish on the hillock south of Arakuzha church. It was built between 1800 and 1810 and is dedicated to St. Sebastian. The tradition of seeking the intercession of St. Sebastian for protection from epidemics was started by European missionaries. It remains one of the well-known pilgrimage sites for devotees in and around Arakuzha. The Sunday after Easter (പുതുഞായർ) is the feast day, celebrated in honor of St. Thomas, the Apostle of India, St. Mathew, the evangelist, and St. Sebastian, the patron of Malekurish. Thousands of people from different regions and religions attend this feast, which lasts for 10 days. Devotees climb the hillock reciting the Stations of the Cross. Each station is beautifully depicted, established in 2001 under the leadership of the then vicar, Father George Edathotty. Currently, a Rosary Way is being erected on the hilltop, where people recite the rosary in small groups every day.
